Gluten Free Sleep Aids: Puts you to Sleep and Safe for your Tummy

list of gluten free natural sleep aidsA few years ago when I found out I had a problem with gluten, I had to completely change my diet, but I had no clue I’d have to worry about finding gluten free sleep aids, too.

I went through a kind of trial and error period, trying a lot of different products to help my chronic insomnia. Natural sleep aids are not always clearly marked whether they’re gluten free or not, so my belly paid for it.

I have used each of these gluten free sleep remedies and can honestly say they work great at helping me to sleep without causing any gastro issues.

Gluten free people need sleep, too!

Alteril Natural Sleep Aid: My Favorite Hands Down

gluten free sleep aidAlteril Sleep Aid

Alteril is my favorite natural sleep aid because it flat out works. If my insomnia is acting up, Alteril is what I take to fall asleep fast.

My problem is that I am always wide awake at night and never really ever feel sleepy. I take Alteril about an hour before bed. It makes me feel like I’m getting sleepy naturally, plus it helps me stay asleep all night.

One of my main pet peeves with sleep aids is that most of them make you wake up with a hangover. I always wake up feeling natural and ready to face the day when I take this.

Olly Restful Sleep Gummies are Effective and Yummy 🙂
gluten free sleep aidOLLY Restful Sleep Gummy Supplements, Blackberry Zen

I tried Olly sleep gummies a few months ago just to see if they would work. I’m still a kid at heart, and if something says gummies I just gotta have some.

I took these about a half hour before bed. By the time I took a shower and got into bed I was out like a light. I fell asleep and didn’t wake up until my alarm went off the next morning.

The only problem I had with these is I wanted to eat more because they tasted so darn good!

Gluten Free Herbal Teas for Sleeping

Drinking herb tea is one of the best ways to treat insomnia naturally, especially if you can only use gluten free sleep aids. They almost never have side effects and they help your body regulate itself to fall asleep naturally.

There’s a lot of herbal teas out there, and it can be hard to know what are the best herbal teas for sleep, let alone those that are safe for celiacs. When looking for an herbal tea sleep aid, though, the only herb you should avoid is oats because of the possibility of cross contamination.

These are some of the herbal teas I like for sleep, both in terms of effectiveness and taste:

Magnesium is Nature’s Best Gluten Free Sleep Aid!
gf sleeping aidsKAL – Magnesium Glycinate 400, 180 tablets

Magnesium is the ultimate natural gluten free sleep aid because it’s just a mineral. You don’t have to worry about what’s in it or how it will affect you because every cell in your body needs it.

Using magnesium as a sleep aid is a smart move if you can’t sleep because a lack of magnesium actually causes insomnia.

I take 600mg of magnesium nightly, and it’s pretty much busted my insomnia. I fall asleep, stay asleep, and wake up without that dang hungover feeling.

The only thing you MUST do is only take magnesium glycinate, magnesium citrate, or chelated magnesium.  All other forms of magnesium will cause diarrhea!

Worried about tummy problems? An easier way to take magnesium for insomnia is by using a magnesium transdermal spray. The magnesium is absorbed through your skin, so it won’t cause diarrhea.

Homeopathic Remedies are the Best Gluten Free Sleep Aids

natural gluten free sleep aidsBach Rescue Natural Sleep Remedy, Liquid Melts

Bach’s Rescue Sleep Remedy is one of the first natural sleep aids I tried. I was using it before I found out I couldn’t have gluten, so I was glad I could still use it.

Bach’s is a homeopathic sleep aid, which means it creates balance between the mind and body so the body is free to heal itself. I know that sounds all new age-y, but Bach’s remedies have been around for 120 years because it works.

When I use these, I put a couple under my tongue when I go to bed. If I do happen to wake up in the middle of the night, I take a couple more and usually go right back to sleep.

The great thing about Bach’s Rescue Sleep Remedy is they have no taste.

Homeopathic Sleep Tablets

I’ve really found homeopathic sleep remedies to be one of the most effective things to help me get to sleep over the years. They actually help me get over my insomnia spell so I don’t have to take something continually.

Calms Forte is another one of my favorites I’ve used over the years and I later found out was gluten free. You can buy them in either a tablet form that you swallow, or a tablet that dissolves in your mouth. They’re both equally effective, it just depends on whether you want to taste something.

Sleeping Great, Gluten Free Style

Gluten is everywhere, even in products to help insomnia. I never realized that until I couldn’t have gluten anymore. I really had to hunt to find true gluten free sleep aids.

Yeah, I could have taken OTC sleeping pills, but they can be dangerous and habit forming. I’d rather use all natural sleep aids to help me when my insomnia acts up.

So if you’re struggling with sleep but you’re gluten intolerant, consider one of these GF sleeping aids so you can get a good night’s sleep.

Alteril should not be listed as gluten safe. After emailing the company they informed me that Alteril does not have any gluten ingredients; however it is produced on equipment that comes into contact with gluten ingredients. I have celiac and have been sick for two days because of the cross contamination.

Hi, Rocio. I’m so sorry you have been sick from Alteril. Thanks for reaching out and sharing what you learned. I’ll make a note that for those who are extremely sensitive, there is a risk of cross contamination. I hope you recover soon. 🙁
