Still Awake? Try Coconut Oil and Honey for Sleep
Do you lay awake night after night trying to will yourself to sleep? Nothing’s worse than not being able to sleep, then finally falling asleep just to wake up two hours later. But wait! You finally fall into a blissful sleep….about 30 minutes before your alarm goes off.
Arrggghh!
You’re not alone, I feel ya. I’ve had insomnia on and off for years. Sometimes I’m just not sleepy, other times I can’t turn my brain off and sleep. I decided early on I wanted to only use natural ways to get to sleep. So when I saw this recipe the other day, I knew I had to try coconut oil and raw honey for sleep.
Raw Honey, Coconut Oil, and Better Sleep
Have you ever just woke up in the middle of the night for no reason whatsoever and couldn’t go back to sleep? It’s not because your mind suddenly feels the need to ponder the meaning of life. A lot of times the reason you’re waking up is because your blood sugar spiked and your liver doesn’t have enough energy to fuel your body through the night.
When your liver doesn’t have enough energy, your adrenal glands pump out the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol. These little dudes don’t just cause insomnia, they can also make your butt big if your liver goes without glycogen on a regular basis.
Why is Taking Coconut Oil and Honey for Sleep Nature’s Magic Sleep Potion?
Spectrum Organic Coconut Oil, Unrefined, 14 oz
You see, coconut oil is a type of fat your body needs, but often is deficient in because of our western diets. It’s a super healthy fat that provides you with the necessary building blocks your body needs to produce sleep hormones, like seratonin and melatonin.
Coconut oil will also help you feel fuller longer, so you won’t be waking up with the munchies. This awesome oil also helps you burn fat, so taking coconut oil and honey for sleep can help you rev up your metabolism.

Raw honey is a near perfect, but underused sleep aid. Remember what I said about blood sugar spikes waking you up? Raw honey produces glycogen, which the liver uses as fuel it burns throughout the night.
Raw honey creates a cascade of sleepy chain reactions. It triggers the release of a small insulin spike. That spike causes the brain to produce tryptophan, which turns into serotonin, which then turns into melatonin.
The melatonin then suppresses any further blood sugar spikes for the night and makes you drowsy, which means you’ll have a restful, uninterrupted night’s sleep.
Honey does so much more for your sleep! I wrote a post about the amazing sleep benefits of honey if you’d like to find out more about this awesome ingredient.

The Coconut Oil and Honey for Sleep Recipe
Before you begin, I want to stress the importance of quality ingredients. You need pure organic unrefined raw honey because it hasn’t had its nutrients cooked out by pasteurization like most commercial honeys.
It’s also important to use organic unrefined virgin coconut oil because mass marketed oils can contain harmful chemicals used in the distillation process of the oil.
This recipe will last one to two nights. If you want to make enough for a week at a time, just triple the recipe. You don’t have to worry about mold because neither the coconut oil nor the honey will go bad because they inhibit the growth of bacteria.
- 1 Tbsp unrefined virgin coconut oil
- 1/2 Tsp organic raw unfiltered honey
- Pinch of Himalayan pink sea salt
Mix all three ingredients together and take a spoonful right before you get into bed. Put the rest of it in a small stainless steel or glass jar and keep it beside your bed. If you do wake up in the middle of the night, take another spoonful to fall back asleep easier.
Mixing honey and oil is a bit like mixing oil and water, especially if your coconut oil is liquid. Stir it up really well right before you take it.
I think this coconut oil and honey sleep potion is pretty tasty, but I know the thought of eating oil could gross out some people. There is a yummier way to take coconut oil and honey for sleep if you’d rather not eat the oil straight.
Try the warm milk variation: Heat up 8 ounces of milk and stir in a teaspoonful of the sleep potion. Drink right before bedtime. You’ll get a double dose of sleepiness with this method because of the tryptophan that’s in the milk!
Make Honey and Coconut Oil to Sleep Better Tonight!
I really like how well coconut oil and honey has worked to help me get to sleep. My main problem is I don’t get sleepy when I should. You know, at like, 11pm, 12am…..heck, even 1am. This sleep recipe really makes me drowsy and I haven’t found it hard at all to fall asleep.
If you’re having trouble sleeping occasionally or suffer from chronic insomnia, I really encourage you to try coconut oil and honey for sleep before you try over-the-counter sleep aids. Sleeping pills aren’t good for you in the long run, (unless prescribed by your doctor) and can even make your insomnia worse.
Taking honey and coconut oil for sleep is an all natural way to treat insomnia that works and won’t leave you feeling hungover in the morning. You’ll get a good night’s rest and wake up ready to take on the day 🙂
I really need to try this as I have insomnia.
It’s really helpful 🙂
I seriously believe coconut oil is the cure for everything! It helps hair grow, it helps skin glow, and now it helps people sleep?!
It’s the cure-all!
I can sleep any time, anywhere, but my poor hubby needs this. Will have him try it as I have all the ingredients already. Thanks for the recipe.
I hope it works for him 🙂
Getting sleepy as I post this
Hey, wonderful post! Actually I need to try all these remedies because I am really with the lack of sleep and because of that I am spoiling my day. Thanks a lot dear for sharing such a wonderful things that I can do for getting better slip.
How long does it take to work and how often do we need to take it?
Hi there! I usually take it 30 minutes or so before I go to bed, and sometimes I’ll take it if I wake up in the middle of the night. You’ll have to experiment though, since natural remedies can work differently for each individual. 🙂
I accidentally discovered that using coconut oil makes me sleepy. I sometimes rub coconut oil on my feet before I go to bed. I cover my feet with socks and in the morning my feet are nicely moisturized. Well, I noticed that the nights that I did this, I fell asleep very quickly, which is unusual for me since I it usually takes me about 20 minutes to fall asleep. Since I entered menopause I’ve had trouble with waking up around 3 or 4 o’clock in the morning to go to the bathroom and then not being able to get back to sleep. This happened again recently and as I was lying there trying to go back to sleep I started thinking about how coconut oil on my feet helped me get sleepy so I thought what the heck, I’ll rub some on my feet now and see if it helps. Within 10 minutes I was starting to get sleepy and before I knew it I had fallen asleep and didn’t wake up again until it was time for me to get up. I started googling this phenomenon and found your website. I hope my story helps some other old lady.
